Exams, Kids, Hypotheses and the International Friendly

This past week was one of preparing for exams, then grading exams.

Both classes had exams on Thursday, so I spent much of Thursday and Friday, grading. On Friday evening, we had a soccer game, and suffered our first loss of the season. The team was very good, so I had no problem losing to them. In the process, I got some kind of deep thigh bruise (I collided, at full speed, with their goalie) that has been not a fun thing to deal with the rest of the weekend.

We had friends over for dinner last night, who have a 1 1/2 year old daughter. I don't remember the last time I ate with a 1 1/2 year old, but it was exciting, and a little scary. Nothing scary happened at dinner, but the thought of constantly chasing after a little kid is a little scary to me.

Today, Sunday, I've spent quality time with the statistics book, attempting to wrap my brain around hypothesis testing, and doing calculations on the calculator. I think I spent 4-5 hours today working on, and with, the hypothesis testing chapter. I'm glad it's a three-day weekend, because I still have a fair amount of work to do tomorrow.

We went to a teammate's house in the afternoon, to watch the USA-Latvia soccer game (the US won 1-0). There was an 18-week old baby there, so we got a slightly different view of parenting than we did last night.

The world cup is in 12 days, and it's getting exciting. It kind of sucks that almost all the weekday games happen while I'm at work. I've decided to tape games every day, and leave work as soon as I can, so I can watch the tapes at home every evening. It's a little crazy, but not as crazy as this....

The weekend

I feel like this blog has turned into what I did over the weekend. I should really post more during the middle of the week.

With that said, I do want to mention that the quarter (and the year) is wearing me down. I feel like I'm not in the best of moods, especially when I'm in my office hour. I just feel exhausted. It's tough to teach the same students for a whole year, and, as much as I like the students in my MPS class, I have to admit, I'm looking forward to the end of the year.

So, it was a busy weekend. I got less sleep than I do during the week (again), but it was alright.

We had another soccer game, and I scored the most incredible goal I have ever witnessed. The video of the goal (which was recorded by our team's part time camera person, Lauren) is on the team site. It's hard to see and too hard to describe here, so if you ever want to know more about that goal, talk to me in person.

On Saturday, we volunteered at a Bridge for Africa event, in San Jose. In the process of setting up, Lindsay (who coordinated a lot of the Bridge stuff) took a few pictures of me pretending to sell stuff to Lauren. She's going to use the pictures on the Bridge website. Here is one of the pictures.



We then went to a coffee shop to get some work done, and then I saw Goal! on DVD (it just came out in the theaters on Friday). It was alright, but I wouldn't pay to see it. I got the DVD from a teammate.

On Saturday night, we went up to the City for a party hosted by a friend of Lauren. We were there for a couple of hours, then came back home.

Sunday was spent grading, and grading, and grading.

That's the past few days.

the past week

It has been a dull week and a half since my last post, for the most part.

I'm trying to think of what has happened, and all I can think of is that we finally had our first soccer game of the season, on Friday.

We won! This is our first real victory (we got a win last season on a technicality, because the opposing team broke a leage rule that gave us the win).

I scored 2 of the 3 our goals. There are videos of them on the team website. You can see my cartwheel celebration after I score.

The win came at a cost though, as both my ankles were in horrible shape on Friday night and Saturday.

On Saturday, we did a lot of driving around the South Bay, going to the flea market, lunch, back to the flea market, the mission cafe in Santa Clara, then to the Sabercats arena football game. We got free bobble heads. If you happen to really want a San Jose Sabercats bobble head, let me know, and you can have it.

I realize that arena football doesn't do much for me. I didn't particularly enjoy watching the game, and I wished I was more into it, but it never happened.

Lauren hosted a book club, so I went to go watch our women's team play a game (they lost), and then did some work.

What else? I told you it was kind of a dull week.
