Giving Thanks

Over the past few days leading up to Thanksgiving, several perple asked me if I celebrated Thanksgiving. The question often came up after the person found out that I am a vegetarian. It got me thinking though - what does it mean to celebrate Thanksgiving?

If it means eating Turkey, then I don't. If it means eating, then I guess I cebrate Thanksgiving 3 times a day, all year long. I guess it lies somewhere in between.

Growing up in Nigeria, I don't remember us celebrating Thanksgiving (it's not a Nigerain holiday, but my father would be sure to let us know when any major American holiday was upon us). Hopefully, he can comment on here, to let us all know if we celebrated Thanksgiving in Nigeria.

The thing I don't like about the holiday is that it's supposed to be a day of giving thanks for what you have. I would like to think I do that more than one day a year. It also has become so tied to things other than it's name (eating lots of food, football games, the big sales the weekend holds) that, I think, waters down the holiday.

Do I celebrate Thanksgiving? Yes, but the holiday means something slightly different to me. I met Lauren the day after Thanksgiving, 3 years ago. That's what I'm most thankful for this weekend.

College Basketball

I found myself screaming "oh, yes!", and jumping out of my seat, at 8:30 this evening. Geordi got scared and darted out of the room.

Why am I screaming? Because the college basketball season has started, and Michigan State just beat Texas.

As much as I can say I don't care about the outcome of the 4th game of the Michigan State Basketball team's schedule (they usually play something like 30 games), I do.

Go Spartans!

There's nothing like NCAA basketball, except, of course, the World Cup.

Accent

People never seem to know what my accent is. When I lived in Baltimore, people thought I sounded Canadian, when I was in Michigan, people thought I was from Boston.

Being that I'm engaged to a linguist, I get the occasional test like this (although Lauren doesn't think much of it). Turns out I sound like I could be from anywhere.....

Busy Weekend

In addition to the work I usually have to do over the weekends (grade exams, homework, and writing an exam, this weekend), I was in class from 9-4 on Saturday.

I'm taking a communications class as part of the SJSU MBA program, and we have two Saturday classes. This was the long one. We have another one in a couple of weeks, that is scheduled from 9-2.

Because of this, I was not able to get all the work done I would have liked, and have felt pretty tired all weekend.

On another note, Lauren and I went to Hakone Gardens today, to get some pictures taken. We're going to use them in our holiday card, which we'll send out if in the next several weeks.

I guess I should go back to work now. This was a work break.
